The pap smear is a fundamental test in women’s healthcare, used to detect abnormal cellular changes in the cervix that could possibly lead to cancer.
During the natural cervix cells’ cycle, the cells from the inferior layer slowly make their way to the surface, where they eventually detach.
And some cells can develop anomalies in this process.
Importance and frequency
It is recommended that all women form 18 years old or those that already have an active sex life, take a pap smear test regularly. This is vital to maintain a well rounded medical care and the patients must continue taking it even after menopause appears. How often should the test be taken, will only depend on each patient’s clinic history.
If the test shows any anomalies, the patient or the patient’s family has any history of having cervical cancer, or there are any risk factors present, such as having multiple sexual partners, or any history of sexual transmitted diseases, then the doctor will doctor might recommend taking a pap smear test more often.
